IVY TECH / IUPUI BA in Computer Science

Ivy tech has a articulation agreement with IUPUI which states that Ivy Tech students who earn in Associates of Science in CS will be able to transfer to IUPUI as a junior in their BA in applied computer science program. Is it true that I'll have better luck finding a job if I try to go for the BS instead of the BA? Math is just not one of my strongest subjects and I would hate for that to hold be back which is why I was leaning more towards the BA. *Ivy Tech CS degree requirements include Cal I&II, CSCI105(Discrete Logic), BIOL I&II Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://passport.iupui.edu/tsap.html

I plan to go to Texas Tech and get a degree in mechanical engineering because Tech doesn't offer biomedical engineering. What classes can I take to specialize in biomedical engineering and what can I do with that specialty?

Engineering Major Choice

Alright, I am in my second semester at the Colorado School of Mines, and I am looking into what to major in. I am really not sure what I want to major in, but I would really like the opportunity to work outside and in the field traveling. I know Petro is typically a good outdoorsy major, but I do not want to go into that field or any oil driven field. I know a lot of geological engineers work outside, but I don't think I can stand looking at rocks all day. I was thinking about civil engineering as an option. Also, does anyone know anything about humanitarian engineering? There is a minor of that here, but it relatively new, so I'm not sure what exactly to do with it and if I can do anything with it. Beyond that, I was also looking at taking an entrepreneurial route by majoring in mechanical engineering with a business minor. I am also thinking about going with a medical route by going into medical research or maybe med school by majoring in Chemical and Biochemical engineering (Maybe Biochem) and minoring in Biomed E. And then there is metallurgical engineering, which maybe interesting and good outdoor work. If anyone has any advice/experience/insight I would love to hear it. Thanks so much for your guys' help.

how to choose the major

As an international student(no green card), which major is easier to find the job in the US and get the H1B? I just got the two admissions from the Ohio state university and Penn state. (the college of engineering) I'm into industrial engineering, computer science, and petroleum engineering now. But, personally, I think majoring in petroleum engineering is easier to find the job in the US than majoring in computer science. Because not many undergraduates who major in this field. In other words, compared with industrial engineers or computer engineers, it's less competitive to find the job as a petroleum engineer. In addition, starting salaries for petroleum engineers are extremely higher than other majors. However, currently lots of jobs have been slashed by oil and gas production companies worldwide, so majoring in petroleum engineer may be a risky choice. If I major in industrial engineering or computer science, I think it's really competitive because lots of undergraduates who major in this field, compared with petroleum engineering. Therefore, it'll be absolutely hard to find the job, especially I don't have the green card. Could anyone give me some advice?

First time doing a high school engineering fair, any advice?

This is my first time doing a engineering fair, and I'm not exactly sure what to expect. How should you present your project differently than a science fair? Or should you try and implement the two ideas together? I am well aware of the engineering design process, but am confused as how to present everything. I had a pretty small sample size- around 10 people. (The group of people I am making the product for is a minority group and it is hard to come across/ make an experiment with lots of people, it would require lots of planning months ahead.) I definitely see ways I could improve the product, but do I use data to support that (kinda like in a science fair) and their comments? Somewhere I read it was important to mention comments by participants in your experiment for engineering fairs.. but I'm not sure. Yet another reason why I'm confused on how to present the information. Also, what are some other tips you have for success?

Tell me about Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering and Design...

My son got accepted at UIUC for Industrial Engineering. Within this college they also offer a Systems Engineering and Design Degree (formerly General Engineering). He doesn't really know much about either of those degrees. He applied for Mechanical Engineering and put IE as a second choice. Honestly, at 17 years old he doesn't know what he wants to do but really likes all aspects of engineering. He chose these two based on their descriptions in the various schools handouts. It is very difficult to transfer into the Mechanical Engineering program. Any help would be great!

Getting Security Clearance with juvie record

Hey CC, I have a bit of an obstacle ahead of me. I am a recent grad, and graduated last year. I've been applying for jobs and a bunch require security clearance. I have an old juvenile record that I hoped I could overcome with a BS.EE, also I love engineering. My offense is 11 years old, happened when I was 13 I think, now I'm 24. The offense was possession of a weapon (knuckles), it was then dismissed, and I think it's considered a Class A misdemeanor. I'm wondering if there are any success stories for anyone here with records but got clearance anyways. On plenty of applications, I see it asks for in the past seven years, so I think I'm okay in that respect. But is it even possible for a security clearance job? Also I notice at certain hiring events they fingerprint you before allowing you on site. I'm wondering if they're looking for warrants(which i have none), or just a general check right then and there.

Northwestern vs Georgia Tech for Chemical Engineering

I've been accepted to both and I can't decide which uni I should go to. I know ranking-wise both are very good in chemical engineering. So I'm more interested in the overall uni life (academically and socially), the whole college experience. Are they rigorous? What is living in Atlanta or Chicago (or Evanston) like? etc. (Northwestern is ridiculously expensive, but for now let's ignore that fact)

Opinions on quality of programs

I have applied to some UC and State schools and so far I got into: Chico State - Civil Engineering Sacramento State - Civil Engineering San Jose State - Aerospace Engineering UC Riverside - Bio Engineering BS + MS I wanted to know if anyone has been through any of these programs or knew anything that might be helpful when weighing them together.

Engineering Colleges and Honors Programs - Are They Redundant?

$

It seems to me that engineering programs are de-facto honors programs. They typically have students with higher stats than the general population of their colleges and they usually have a more rigorous curriculum than some other majors. That said, does it matter whether or not a student participates concurrently in an honors program and an engineering program? Some of the perks of honors are early course registration, but engineers typically have a rigid curriculum guideline to follow. Honors sometimes offers special housing with other honors students, but many colleges now offer engineering LLCs which would probably be more beneficial to engineers than an honors community. The downside of honors is that some programs require additional work, including a thesis. Sometimes this can be integrated with the engineering degree, sometimes it is completely separate. It would be great to hear opinions from students who have successfully (or unsuccessfully) participated in both and also from students who passed on an honors opportunity. It would also be nice to hear from engineering industry experts about their opinions of the honors designation.

Will a Six Sigma certification help me get an internship or help after college?

I'm an IE major and my school does a Green Belt Six Sigma certification for $500. When you get out of school they said it quadruples because you're no longer a student. I was wondering if the certification would help me get an internship or if I'd use it after college?

Engineering schools generous with merit aid?

My daughter is looking at industrial/systems engineering schools. I've been told by multiple people and universities that we will not qualify for any financial aid, but because I will have 3 kids in college I can't figure out how I will do it because our income fluctuates so greatly from year to year and we don't have any savings. She's going to apply to Purdue, WIP, RPI, USC, Lehigh, USD, Case Western, NC State, Valparaiso, Butler, Bradley, U of Chicago and Northwestern ... none of which appear to give much merit aid for 34 ACT and 4.7 weighted GPA (3.95 UW). My son (whose qualifications weren't quite as good - 3.8 GPA and 33 ACT - didn't get a dime from Case Western or Purdue, where he will be attending in the fall, but it doesn't look like his major, business, is nearly as competitive which should have made it easier). Any schools we are missing that give good merit aid? (She's looking for a collaborative, not overly competitive environment and although she's not an athlete she is extremely well rounded with speech, debate, and philanthropy). Thanks!

Mechanical Engineering

I am the parent of a student who has accepted admission to Purdue's Exploratory program, Honor's college, after applying to Mechanical Engineering at Purdue. My son objective is to study ME. The dilemma is, should my son attend Purdue and take his chance on being able to secure acceptance as a sophomore to ME, or should he attend UC Irvine (in-state) where he was accepted to ME? Any thoughts on how to compare the two programs, as well as insights or experience in transferring/changing major to engineering at Purdue, would be greatly appreciated.

Best college for Systems Engineering + Booz Allen Hamilton

I recently received a paid internship opportunity with Booz Allen Hamilton, and am eager to take it, as for I am very interested in Systems Engineering (and Entrepreneurship). That being said, what colleges, specifically, do you all recommend I apply for. I was previously looking at Stanford for the Business aspect of things, but 1) their Systems Engineering program isn't the best of the best, and 2) Booz Allen Hamilton has very little opportunities there. So now, I am pretty lost... Thank you for your help in advance!

Biomedical Engineering

I am thinking of majoring in biomedical engineering on a 5 year track that would allow me to graduate with my bachelor's and masters. I know that some people say to major in a different engineering field and minor in biomed, but I am way more interested in getting into the biomedical industry. Will I be able to have a career with a degree in biomedical engineering?

Hello, My son may attend la tech for mechanical or civil engineering. The engineering dept seems to check all the basic boxes (abet etc). Does anyone out there have a good idea or sense about la tech? Any first hand knowledge about the programs? Reputation in the field? Respect among potential employers? Anything anyone has to offer would be helpful. Thanks much.

Penn State UP vs Lehigh IBE Program

Going back and forth between these two options. Plan is to major in computer engineering at Penn State or Lehigh IBE 5 year program dual major which would result in a Computer Engineering BS and a BS in Integrated Business and Engineering Lehigh's sticker price is twice that of Penn State. While cost is important, also trying to consider the ROI. Would not consider Lehigh for engineering over Penn State however, the IBE program is making Lehigh look more attractive. Thoughts on either program and their outcomes?
